Hellopaisa frequently asked questions

M-Pesa is introducing a 3-step authorization process for users receiving funds from South Africa through HelloPaisa.

SMS Notification

When receiving funds through HelloPaisa, you will first receive an SMS notification from M-Pesa containing a 5-digit token number and a shortcode to dial (*240#).

In order for the funds to be transferred into your M-Pesa account, you will need to authorize the transfer by following the 3 steps below;

  • Step 1: Dial the short code (*240#)
  • Step 2: Enter Token Number. (e.g. 91396 found in the SMS)
  • Step 3: Press 1 to confirm purpose of funds.

Upon completion, the funds will be deposited into your M-Pesa account and you will receive a confirmation SMS.

If you decline receiving the funds (i.e. pressing 2) then you will just need to re-enter the shortcode, enter the token number again and press 1.

Call Customer Care at 114 for assistance.  The money should reflect in the recipient’s M-Pesa account unless

  1. The funds in the senders account(HelloPaisa) have depleted or
  2. The recipient is not registered on M-Pesa or
  3. The recipient is a tier 1 customer. If you are a Tier 1 customer, you need to update your details by dialing *200# then press 0 to update details.

3 Attempts: M-Pesa will perform a validation on the token entered. So if you enter special characters/text (i.e anything that is not a digit) the system will respond, that you entered an incorrect token.

You may only use the same token once. Once you enter the token correctly, the transfer will proceed. If you enter the same token (already redeemed token) it will respond as a duplicate (i.e token has already been redeemed)

Not yet, however this will be included as an enhancement in future

Token Does not expire
